Biographical / Historical
According to the 2012 Elon Academy website, "The Elon Academy is a college access and success program for academically promising high school students in Alamance County with a financial need and/or no family history of college. The Academy includes three consecutive summer residential experiences prior to the sophomore, junior and senior years, as well as year-round Saturday programs for students and families. The summer after high school graduation, scholars and families participate in the Elon Academy Transitions to College Program. Once on their respective college campuses, Elon Academy graduates and families are provided with continuing support through the Elon Academy College Success Program to ensure college completion." As stated in the 2008 brochure, "The Elon Academy is an intensive three-year enrichment and leadership development program at Elon University for academically talented Alamance-Burlington high school students with financial need and little or no family history of college. Our mission is to inspire those promising students-who are often underrepresented on college and university campuses-to pursue higher education, build leadership skills, and develop an active sense of social responsibility. We want them to gain the interpersonal skills and sense of self-worth that will position them to succeed in college and beyond. Established in 2007, Elon Academy operates year round to provide scholars with exciting courses and activities, college counseling, and mentoring by Elon faculty and students. The Academy combines a month-long residential program over three successive summers with follow-up experiences during the academic year. As special students at Elon, they have the same access to the resources of the university-from books to e-mail accounts to cultural events and more-as do undergraduates."
