Biographical / Historical
The Fighting Christians Club (also spelled, Fightin' Christians Club) of Elon College was established in 1974 to raise money for the Athletic Scholarship Fund. Supporters of Elon Athletics could become members of the club on several different levels. The supporters included alumni, parents, former athletes, businesses, faculty, staff, and other supporters of Elon College. In the 1980s, the various levels of membership begin with associate member, general member, sustaining member, super member, and finished with the highest level of scholarship patron. According to page 44 in James Waggoner's book titled The Fighting Christians, Elon College Athletics Through the Years, "The term 'Fighting Christians' was first used during the 1922-23 sports season to describe the spirit of Elon athletes who proudly wore their Maroon and Gold uniforms for the small Congregational Christian college." In 1997, the Fighting Christians Club's name was changed to the Elon Athletics Foundation which lasted until 2007. On July 1, 2007 the Phoenix Club was launched, as an improved fundraising unit for athletics, but a continuation of the original Fighting Christians Club that was started in 1974. The Phoenix Club was founded with a mission to fund athletic scholarships for student athletes at Elon University. The collection includes correspondences, newsletters, stickers and decals, brochures, newspaper clippings, programs, prints and drawings, and agendas related to the fundraising organizations.
