Biographical / Historical

This collection includes eleven categories of Convocations that have been held at Elon University over the years, beginning in 1962. The Convocations include: Academic, Alumni, Centennial, Faculty, Fall, Founders Day, Honors, Isabella Cannon Leadership, New Student (formerly known as Opening), Parent's Day, Presidential Inauguration, and Spring (formerly known as Honors). The Convocations that are represented the most in this collection include Fall, Honors, New Student, and Spring (formerly known as Spring). New Student Convocation is typically held at the end of August, and the address is given by the President. Fall Convocation is usually held in September or October when a notable speaker is invited to Elon to give a talk/presentation to the campus community, special guests, and the general public. Spring/Honors Convocation is usually held in March or April and according to the April 7, 2011 program "Each year the Elon University community gathers to recognize academic achievement and philanthropy at the Convocation for Honors. These ideals reflect the commitment to excellence and generosity of spirit that are the heart of a liberal arts and sciences education. Elon seeks to nurture a rich intellectual community and a desire for lifelong learning. This afternoon we congratulate the Class of 2011 and students named to the President's List and Dean's List in 2012. We celebrate the dedication and innovation of Elon faculty who inspire students every day with their passion for learning and discovery. We recognize our generous community of donors who demonstrate their commitment to quality education by providing the resources to ensure that all of our students will benefit from Elon's exceptional academic curriculum." Each Honors Convocation features a notable speaker. Beginning in April 2014, Honors Convocation was changed to Spring Convocation. New Student Convocation is held each August and it serves as a time to welcome and introduce the class of first year students at Elon
