Reid Maynard Family Collection
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of photographs and letters related to the family of Reid Maynard (1896-1983), longtime Elon College trustee and benefactor. There are five ferrotype photographs of Maynard’s grandparents and father Walter Andrew Maynard, most likely from the 1860s. There are also three letters, two dated 1892 to Olivia Atwater, Reid Maynard’s mother, as well as a letter dated 1944 addressed to Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Maynard, then living in the Town of Elon College.
The three letters are:
• A letter addressed to Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Maynard, Elon College, NC R.F.D. postmarked February 15, 1944; letterhead is of George A. Anderson, Yanceyville, NC; the three-page letter begins, “Dear Walter and Olivia”
• A letter addressed to Miss Olivia Atwater, Lambsville, NC, dated April 24th, 1892, from a M. J. Edwards of Burlington, NC. The letter regards her bereavement at the passing of her father.
• A letter addressed to Miss Olivia Atwater, Lambsville, NC, dated May 20th, 1892, from Roxboro, NC. Letter is also in regard to Olivia’s bereavement at the passing of her father; letter does not have envelope and is from a W.M. Lindsay.
The ferrotypes are:
• Wagstaff & Julie R. Maynard
• Walter Andrew Maynard
• Walter A. Maynard
• Sallie Maynard
• Unnamed child
Wagstaff & Julie R. Maynard were Mr. Maynard’s grandparents. Walter Andrew Maynard was Reid Maynard’s father, and Sallie Maynard was his aunt. Olivia Atwater married Walter Andrew Maynard and was the mother of Reid Maynard.
There are two photographs of Walter Andrew Maynard; one is labeled “Walter A. Maynard”. There is also a ferrotype of an unidentified child, who may have been a sibling of Walter Maynard. This ferrotype is in a paper case.

Biographical / Historical
Walter A. and Olivia Atwater were the parents of Reid A. Maynard (1896 – 1983), a longtime Elon trustee. Reid Maynard graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1919 and was a veteran of the First World War. He was an Alamance County textile industry entrepreneur and executive who served on the Elon College Board of Trustees for thirty-five years, until the time of his death. He and his wife, Grace Moore Maynard, were longtime benefactors to Elon, and several buildings on campus were named in their honor. Reid Maynard received an honorary doctorate from Elon College in 1970.
Since Walter A. and Olivia Atwater were the parents of Reid A. Maynard, Wagstaff and Julie R. Maynard were Mr. Reid’s paternal grandparents. Salle Maynard was the sister of Walter A. Manyard.
