Biographical / Historical

Walter A. and Olivia Atwater were the parents of Reid A. Maynard (1896 – 1983), a longtime Elon trustee. Reid Maynard graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1919 and was a veteran of the First World War. He was an Alamance County textile industry entrepreneur and executive who served on the Elon College Board of Trustees for thirty-five years, until the time of his death. He and his wife, Grace Moore Maynard, were longtime benefactors to Elon, and several buildings on campus were named in their honor. Reid Maynard received an honorary doctorate from Elon College in 1970.
