Biographical / Historical
The Southern Christian Convention was formed in 1856 following the schism between the northern and southern churches of the O’Kelly Christian Church, just prior to the American Civil War. The SCC founded Elon College in 1889. The convention joined a national organization, the General Convention of the Christian Church, in 1922. After the merger of the General Convention with the Congregational Church, the SCC became the Southern Convention of the Congregational Christian Churches. In 1965, the Southern Convention merged with the Southern Synod of the Evangelical & Reformed Churches to become the Southern Conference of the United Church of Christ.
