Scope and Contents
Typewritten manuscript of A History of the Christian Church in the South by Durward T. Stokes and William T. Scott. The book was published in 1975 by the Southern Conference of the United Church of Christ. Although Dr. Scott was commissioned to write the book, due to poor health he asked Dr. Stokes to co-author the book with him. Dr. Stokes completed the work on the book after Dr. Scott’s death in 1972.

Biographical / Historical
William T. Scott graduated from Elon College in 1924, having been President of the senior class. He earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Yale, then did graduate work at Union Theological Seminary. He served as a pastor in the Southern Christian Convention of the Congregation Christian Church and was later Superintendent of the SCC. In addition to being a minister, Dr. Scott wrote a pamphlet on the history of the Congregational Christian Church, as well as other works about history. He became the Director of Church Relations for Elon College in 1963 and retired from that position in 1968. In 1970 he accepted the position of Development Association for the Elon Homes for Children. He died on June 17, 1972.
Durward T. Stokes was born in 1908 in Alamance County. He inherited a family grocery store in Graham from his father-in-law and served on city council. He later became a professor of history at Elon College; he earned an undergraduate degree from Elon College in 1964, and then a Master of Arts degree from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1966. In 1968, he earned a Ph.D. from UNC-CH at the age of 59. He was the author of many books and articles about local and North Carolina history, and served on many boards and commissions relating to history. In 1969 he was named the Chair of the Department of Social Sciences at Elon, and in 1975 was the recipient of the Outstanding Alumnus award from the college. In 1977, he was awarded the Daniels-Danieley Award for Excellence in Teaching by Elon College.
