Scope and Contents

This collection consists of the papers of Dr. C. E. Newman, a minister of the Southern Christian Convention of the Congregational Christian Church. A label on the box the papers were in said: “Material from the study of Dr. C. E. Newman, Historian of the Southern Christian Convention, while he was pastor of Church at Virgilina. It was delivered to the Church History Room by Rev. Mathis who succeeded Dr. Newman." The collection includes Dr. Newman’s Reports of the Historian to the convention on a variety of topics related to the history of the church; many of the reports are histories of individual churches. Also included are Dr. Newman’s sermons, correspondence, funeral orations, and Sunday school lessons. In addition, there are some newsletters from the Southern Convention and information on the convention’s insurance plans.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. C. E. Newman was a minister of the Christian Church and later the Congregational Christian Church. He graduated from Elon College in 1899 and was the brother of Dr. J. U. Newman. In 1903, he entered Princeton College for his graduate work. As a minister, he served a number of congregations in the Church, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity at Elon’s 1944 commencement. In later years, he served on many committees for the Congregational Christian Church, was a leader in the O’Kelly Cemetery Project, and a founding member of the Historical Society of the Southern Convention. After W. E. MacClenny’s death in 1946, Dr. Newman became the Historian of the Southern Convention. He died on October 9, 1952 and was buried in the cemetery of Union Congregational Church in Virgilina, Virginia.

Abstract
