Carrie Lee Sizemore Collection
Scope and Contents
The collection is arranged alphabetically by type of material into two series, then chronologically within each series, where applicable. The series are: Correspondence and Printed Material.
Primarily, the collection contains letters that were sent from the President of Elon (L.E. Smith) and the Registrar (C.M. Cannon) to Carrie Lee Sizemore of Virginia urging her to attend Elon College for the 1933-34 school year. The letters outline tuition costs, student fees, and offers of a scholarship to attend Elon (1:1-1:2). Carrie Lee Sizemore did not attend Elon, but these letters represent examples of the kind of language administrators used at Elon after the depression in order to recruit students.
The printed material series contains a brochure from the Department of Music at Elon College from 1933-34. According to her niece, Mary Cook, Carrie Lee Sizemore would have studied music if she attended Elon. The brochure outlines everything associated with the music department including training, musical equipment, music faculty, student music groups, and general information about Elon’s campus (2:1).
