Scope and Contents

The Wesley Alexander collection is fairly large and primarily pertains to the athletic program at Elon College during the 1960s-1980s. Mr. Alexander was a professor of mathematics at Elon and served in many capacities within the athletic program. The collection is arranged alphabetically by type of material into nine series, then chronologically within each series, where applicable. The series are: Artifacts; Charts; Correspondence; Financial Documents; Legal Documents; Lists; Literary Productions; Minutes; Printed Material. There are four small series in this collection, each with different types of materials represented within them. The artifact series contains only one artifact which is a brown leather briefcase that belonged to Mr. Alexander (1:1). The only chart that exists in this series does not pertain to Elon (2:1). The other two small series include financial documents and lists. The financial documents series includes items such as budgets, financial reports, bills, etc… that all pertain to the Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC). The list series contains lists that document the members of the Elon College faculty athletic committee, athletes who received grant-in-aid assistance, recipients of athletic scholarships, etc. The larger series in this collection include correspondences, legal documents, literary productions, minutes, and printed materials. Primarily, the correspondence series contains both letters and memos either to or from Wesley Alexander, as well as other administrators at Elon and athletic conference officials. The letters and memos generally discuss student’s eligibility to play certain sports at Elon, transfer records, extra-curricular activities in relation to athletics, recommendation letters, scholarships and much more. Additionally, some of the correspondences pertain to the NAIA and CIAC. The larger series in this collection include correspondences, legal documents, literary productions, minutes, and printed materials. Primarily, the correspondence series contains both letters and memos either to or from Wesley Alexander, as well as other administrators at Elon and athletic conference officials. The majority of the legal documents represented in the series document grant-in-aid agreements for athletes participating in sports at Elon during the early 1980s. The literary productions series contains materials that mostly relate to the NAIA and/or CIAC. Proposals and amendment’s to these two conferences constitutions are included in this series, as well as rules, regulations and budget reports. The minutes that are included in this collection encompass meeting minutes from the faculty athletic committee at Elon College, the CIAC, the NAIA, the North State Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the South Atlantic Conference, the Southern Conference, and the Student Life Policies Committee at Elon. The printed material series contains items such as announcements, student applications, certificates, handbooks, schedules of events, student transcripts, student and faculty evaluations, and much more. Early Years and Education: * 1930-Born October 1 in Cabarrus County, NC * 1953-Graduated from Appalachian State University and received a B.S. major in mathematics and minored in social studies * 1955-Graduated from Appalachian State University and received a M.A. degree in mathematics and education * 1959-Attended Florida State University and did graduate work in mathematics * 1960-Attended Rutgers University and did graduate work in mathematics * 1968-Graduated from New Mexico State University and received a M.S. degree in mathematics * 1980-Attended Memphis State University and did graduate work in computer science Career: * 1954-55-Mathematics teacher at West Yadkin High School in Yadkin County, NC * 1955-61-Taught at Wingate Junior College * 1961-94-Associate professor of mathematics at Elon College * Chair of the math department at Elon for 12 years Family: * Father was Samuel G.
