Scope and Contents

This collection contains eight boxes of documents and miscellaneous items collected by Mr. Hubert McLendon. The items in this collection consist of a broad variety of materials which mainly pertain to Mr. McLendon's Confederate interest in the Civil War. He compiled a large amount of papers from book chapters to essays to magazines to photographs within this interest. The collection is arranged alphabetically by type of material into fifty-five series, then chronologically within each series, where applicable. The smaller series in this collection are academic transcripts, agendas, artifacts, awards, book chapters, book reviews, brochures, by-laws, catalogs, certificates, constitutions, course information, currency, diaries, flyers, guidelines, lists, lyrics, membership information, memberships, menus, minutes, music scores, newsletter clippings, newspaper, pamphlets, portraits, poetry, posters, presentations, printed material, reminiscences, reports, research notes, resolutions, sermons, and speeches. For more information about each series, see the section below titled "Detailed Description of the Collection." The genealogy series contains papers of when Mr. McLendon researched his family's heritage. Other series that include genealogical type information include certificates and posters. The series invitations, journal articles, magazine clippings, magazines, member lists, newspaper clippings, postcards, and programs are larger than the previously mentioned smaller series', though not the largest series in the collection. The maps series contains several battle maps, showing the progression of the Battle of Gettysburg (1912), the First Battles of Manassas (1981) and the Second Battle of Manassas (1985). There is also a hand drawn map of Danville, Virginia from 1829 in the prints and drawing series. The membership cards were collected by Mr. McLendon from 1957 to 1984. He was a member in a variety of southern organizations such as the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Military Order of the Stars and Bars. The largest series' are correspondence and newsletters. Most of the letters in the correspondence series were written by Mr. McLendon from 1957 to 1994 and pertain to his interests in the Confederate side of the Civil War. There are several facsimile copies of letters dated from the late 1800s, as well. The essay series includes several essays written by Mr. McLendon, mainly concerning the Civil War. However, other topics are represented such as American education, faith and belief, and Rudyard Kipling. The book review series contains further essays written by Mr. McLendon. The photographs in this collection include General Robert E. Lee, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, President Jefferson Davis and members of his cabinet, the generals of the Confederacy, and other Civil War soldiers. None of the photographs are originals, only copies and re-prints. Also included in this series are photos of Mr. Hubert McLendon. The prints and drawings series include two prints, one of Confederate commanders and the other of Union commanders. The photographs in this collection include General Robert E. Lee, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, President Jefferson Davis and members of his cabinet, the generals of the Confederacy, and other Civil War soldiers. None of the photographs are originals, only copies and re-prints. Also included in this series are photos of Mr. Hubert McLendon. The prints and drawings series include two prints, one of Confederate commanders and the other of Union commanders.

Biographical / Historical

Hubert F. "Mac" McLendon was a collector of books and various memorabilia pertaining to the Civil War (primarily with a Southern focus). He was a life-long resident of Burlington, North Carolina. Related Materials

Hubert McLendon's extensive book collection, along with this manuscript collection were donated to Elon College (specifically to the Iris Holt McEwen Library, now Belk Library) in 1996. All of the books are cataloged and part of the McLendon Civil War collection. The titles can be accessed from the Carol Grotnes Belk Library's online catalog by searching 'McLendon' as a call number.
