Lyndon B. Johnson Visit to Elon
Scope and Contents
This collection is arranged alphabetically by type of material and is divided into five series that include: Audio Recordings; Correspondence; Literary Productions; Photographs; Printed Material. Where applicable, each series is arranged chronologically. The majority of the materials in this collection pertain to Lyndon B. Johnson’s visit to Elon College on March 8, 1962. While visiting, President Johnson delivered a speech during the Founder’s Day Convocation ceremony.
The audio recordings series contains a reel to reel film and VHS tape. The contents on the reel to reel are unknown (1:1). However, the VHS tape is a recording of Johnson giving his speech during the Founder’s Day Convocation ceremony (1:2).
The correspondence series includes letters that discuss the planning of Lyndon B. Johnson’s visit to Elon, as well as a variety of reactions to his visit and speech (2:1). Of particular interest in the literary productions series is a copy of the original speech and remarks made by Lyndon B. Johnson during the Founder’s Day Convocation ceremony (3:1). In addition, the other item in this series offers a unique reminiscence of the day’s events, including behind the scenes perspectives (3:2).
One of the larger series in the collection, photographs, contains black and white and color prints of Lyndon B. Johnson and other individuals involved with Johnson’s visit to Elon College in 1962. Many of the other individuals represented in the photographs are unidentified.
The largest series in the collection, printed material, has a variety of items relating to Lyndon B. Johnson’s visit to Elon College. Primarily, this series is made up of multiple newspaper clippings, capturing the events of March 8, 1962, as well as events before and after the visit. An invitation and program from the Founder’s Day Convocation ceremony are the only two items representing that event in this series (5:1,5:10).
