Scope and Contents

The Elon University Scrapbook Collection consists of various scrapbooks compiled by Elon alumni, graduating classes, organizations, and events. The majority of the scrapbooks are from the early to mid-1900’s with several dated post-1970. The majority of the scrapbooks are from individuals who recount their experiences through writing and pictures. The individuals who contributed to this collection include:Adelia Rebecca Jones Truitt, Walter Clifton Elder, Ira Raper Gunn, Warren McCulloch, Kate Wheeler, Dr. John Galloway Truitt Sr., Essie Mae Truitt Simpson, Nellie Sue Fleming, Vitus Reid Holt, Annie Gordon Floyd, Mary Margaret Miller Hardcastle, Margarete Christine Corbitt Riddick Todd, Naomi Moiser, Clara Lucile Johnston Cullers Herr, J.V. Simpson, Beulah Hensley Sullivan, Ella Brunk Smith, Ruth Page Clark, Lucy Virginia Dick Beaty, and Avic Huffine. The organizations who contributed to this collection include: Class of 1918, Elon Players, Founders Day, Society for the Advancement of Management, Gibsonville Music Club, Student Union Board, First Christian Church, Tom Sawyer-Huck Finn Tennis Tournament, Habitat for Humanity, Admissions and Orientation, and Phi Beta Kappa. Many of the scrapbooks contain photos of Elon throughout history, such as in scrapbook #006, where Dr. John Galloway includes photographs of West Dorm, Old Main Administration Building, the water tower, old well, and various Elon students. Another containing various photos is scrapbook #021, which was compiled by Naomi Mosier, who is the author of several of the scrapbooks in the collection. Scrapbooks also contain letters, notes, postcards, pamphlets, and programs. Many of them relate to Elon College (University), but others are from the author’s personal lives not related to Elon. An example of the personal documents included in many of these scrapbooks can be seen in scrapbook #011. Many organizations, such as the Society for the Advancement of Management, include documents from specific events and time periods, such as newspaper clippings, photographs, and meeting minutes.

The scrapbooks are arranged by scrapbook number. Scrapbook number is generated based on when scrapbook was added to the collection.
