Scope and Contents

Most of the documents in this collection pertain to denominations related in some way to the history of Elon College and Elon University: the O’Kelly Christian Church; the Congregational and Congregational Christian Churches; the Evangelical and Reformed Church; and the United Church of Christ. Included are documents relating to the conferences affiliated with these denominations, such as the American Christian Convention and the Southern Conference of the UCC. Documents will also be related to the various committees, boards, missions, departments, and publications of these churches. Also included are documents related to churches of other denominations located in the geographical vicinity of the Town of Elon and Elon University. Documents include programs, addresses, articles, reports, correspondence, minutes, essays, pamphlets, bibliographies, contracts, brochures, resolutions, flyers, financial documents, maps, calendars, newspaper clippings, and other documents.

Biographical / Historical

The Christian Church that created Elon College, sometimes known as the “O’Kelly Christian Church” for founder James O’Kelly, merged with the Congregational Church of the United States to form the Congregational Christian Church in 1931. The Congregational Christian Church merged with the Evangelical and Reformed Church to create the United Church of Christ in 1957.
