Scope and Contents

Collection consists of primarily correspondence from Mr. Iva Shafer Diehl while Dean of Women at Elon College to her husband Mr. George West Diehl who was obtaining a PhD at the University of Chicago. The letters start in June 1930 while she was living with her parents, prior to her starting employement at Elon in Septmber 1930. The correspondence ends December 15, 1931 during her second year of employment at Elon. Collection also includes Iva Diehl's resume circa 1930.

Correspondence includes discussions surrounding daily life and events, her mother's illness, the finicial difficulties Elon College faced during the Great Depression, the change in College leadership from President Harper to President Smith, and activites she undertook while Dean of Women. On occasion newspaper clippings, letters from others, and event programs are included in letters sent by Mrs. Diehl to her husband.

Biographical / Historical

Iva Carruth Shafer was born August 18, 1890 in Lexington, Virgina to Mary and John Alexander Shafter. Between 1917 and 1920 Iva married George West Diehl. George West Diehl was born in Pennsylvania, December 1887 to Oliver Diehl and Eleanor Eliza West.

Mrs. Iva Diehl was hired in summer/fall of 1930 as the Dean of Women at Elon College, while Dean of Women her husband George West Diehl was obtaining his PhD at the University of Chicago. Mrs. Diehl remanined Dean of Women for the 1930 and 1931 school year.

Mrs. Iva Diehl died June 24, 1965. Mr. George West Diehl died August 15, 1975.
